Pen on paper. Often pencil on back of an envelope. Occasionally crayon on a torn napkin corner. Rarely pen on a take-away menu as hard to decipher at a later date. Once pen on the footer of a newspaper. Once blunt pencil on header of a newspaper. Thrice on a mini personalised bank statement from hole-in-wall. Never on paper money. Never on coin money, that would be ridiculous. I do not do graffiti but I once wrote on a bus window; I used my finger in the condensation.
